Top 7 Things International Students Should Pack Before Leaving for Canada

Packing up your whole life into a suitcase may sound like a big challenge, but don’t worry! We've got your back with some helpful tips to make the process a breeze. Here are a few things to keep in mind when deciding what to bring to your new home.

Passport and Travel Documents

Don't forget the most important item - your passport! Double-check that you have all the necessary travel documents to avoid any last-minute panic.

Keep your ID and any important documents, like your letter of acceptance or your financial documents easily accessible. These will come in handy when you go through immigration once you arrive.

Comfortable Clothing and Shoes

Pack clothes and shoes that make you feel comfortable and confident. Bring versatile pieces that you can mix and match for different occasions and weather conditions.

Downtown Kingston is a walkable community, and there will be plenty of walking around when using public transport.

Be mindful of the weather, when are you arriving in the year? Consider the extreme winter conditions, would you like to buy your winter clothes at your home country or in Canada?

Clothes are often the largest things in your luggage and take up a lot of space. It's important to follow the airline's rules regarding size and weight. If you're traveling by bus or train to Kingston, make sure to check their rules too.

Personal Care Essentials

Pack your must-have personal care items, like toiletries and medications. While you can purchase them at your destination, having your preferred brands can make the transition easier.

If you have specific prescribed medication that may not be available in Canada, it's advisable to bring it with you when you move. Additionally, carrying English translations of your medical records can be helpful in case you need to access medical services.

Adapters and Chargers

Stay connected by packing the right adapters and chargers for your electronics. It's no fun being unable to charge your phone or laptop when you need them the most!

Be aware that the standard voltage is 120 V rather than the 240 V used elsewhere in the world. Also, consider the shape of the sockets and plugs that may be different to what you’re used to.

Snacks from Home

If you have any favourite snacks or treats from your home country, bring a small stash to ease any homesickness and share a taste of your culture with new friends.

Photos and Mementos

Bring a few cherished photos or small mementos that remind you of home. They can provide comfort and a sense of familiarity in your new surroundings.

Lastly...An Open Mind and Positive Attitude!

The most important thing you can bring is an open mind and a positive attitude. Embrace the adventure, be open to new experiences, and make lifelong memories!

Remember, packing is just the beginning of your exciting international student journey. Embrace the unknown, make new friends, and immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of your new home. Enjoy every moment and see you around!
